National Ag Appreciation Week

 

In case you missed it, this past week was National Ag Appreciation Week.  So in light of the “festivities” I am posting my top five favorite farmers:

5.  Uncles.  My Uncle Ralph farmed for years in the Furnace County area.  Later, his son David farmed with him.  Farmer’s uncles: Rick, Cliff, and Brad farmed in Kearney County.  Their sons are now farming that ground.

4.  Great Grandfathers.  My Great Grandparents {on both sides of my family} farmed.  The Murphy’s farmed near Harlan County while the Dodson’s farmed near the Furnace County area.  This was back in the day, man.  We’re talking horses and eventually cab-less tractors.  Great Grandpa  Murphy used to tell me stories about his horses, Pat and Mike.  Great Grandpa had cows, pigs, and chickens and they lived off of 80 acres…can you imagine?!?  Farmer is {at least} a fourth generation farmer.  I suspect his Great Grands farmed in Kearney County.

3.  Grandfathers.  Farmer’s Grandfathers both farmed in Kearney County.  Gpa Kenny farmed the ground that makes up most of what we farm now.  He had three sons {and a daughter} so he kept them all busy with cows, and eventually sold pivots for irrigation that the boys helped assemble.  I’m not sure how many acres Gpa Kenny started out with.  The house he was raised in is still standing today.  Grandpa Richard’s ground is farmed by farmer’s cousin.  {How many times can I use farm/farmer/farmed in a sentence?!?}

2.  Dads.  My dad doesn’t farm, but I’m sure being raised in rural Nebraska, he did his share of odd jobs for farmers growing up.  Farmer’s dad, “Papa” or “Pop” still farms today.  We farm together in Kearney County mostly on the ground that’s been in the family for years, but some things have changed thru the years.  Ground changes hands, irrigation is a necessity, and the tractors and combines are DEFINITELY NOT cab-less.  I’m sure he could share stories of days in the field with the best of them.

1.  Farmer.  Of course!  My favorite farmer is my husband.  We grow corn and soybeans.  Farmer has cows and a couple of horses and an overused 4wheeler!  Our girls Love, Love, Love the farm and spend as much time there as possible.   Farming sure has changed a lot over the years, but it is definitely in this family’s blood!
