Whatta Weekend!

We had a busy weekend last weekend.  The girls are playing soccer, I’ve had some cakes to do, there have been 4H meetings/gatherings to get to, a piano recital and a branding {or two} to get done!  Have a look:

Run, Makenna!

The girls both played at 11am last Saturday morning, so trying to get shots of each girl was a bit tricky.  Marah was super excited because she scored 3 goals for her team.  Makenna’s team is a little more advanced and it’s fun to see them really learning the game.  The girls played a good game, but ended up losing 0-2. Their field is so much bigger and just watching them run up and down it makes me tired!  : 0 )

These were a couple of cakes I had due last weekend.  A first communion and a birthday.  This weekend, I have two birthday cakes to get done and a confirmation cake.  Lucky for me I didn’t get any of them switched up yet…confirmation/communion…this is difficult!  I think I have next weekend “off” and then it’s the start of Graduation cakes.  Still can’t wait till those are just a memory!

We went bowling on Saturday night with Makenna’s 4H club.  It was a fun time.  We got to meet and chat with the members and their families. There was mystic bowling and of course video games and such.   The kids bought pizza, pop and popcorn for all of us.  You can get really yummy pizza at the bowling alley.  If you’re ever in the area, try it out!

Our Sunday wasn’t our typical Sunday.   We usually make it to church or just sleep in if we’re feeling lazy.  Not last Sunday.   Makenna had a piano recital to go to at 2:30pm and Farmer and our friend Mark had scheduled to brand cows and calves together on Sunday…starting by 9am with our herd.

Just the calves.  Mamas are in another pen.  Great job, guys!

Uncle Justin made Marah “warm up” Stretch.  She was happy to do the job!

Mark gave this heifer her shots and Danny and Papa are getting her branded.  See that smoke…its smells…not nice, either.

Now on to those babies.  They were in a make-shift pen inside a larger pen.  The cowboys rope a calf and drag it out to the guys on the “ground crew.”  They hold down the calf, untie the rope for the cowboy and make sure each calf gets a shot from the guys with the shots and then Papa swoops in and gives ‘em a brand.  It’s a much smaller iron than the mamas get, but it smells just as bad.  I think the guys wrestling the calves have the hardest job.  They always try to line up a bunch of young guys for this job!  The calves are little, but they sure are quick and feisty!

It only took the guys a little over 1 hour to work all 108 calves.  They got a system down and away they went!  After ours were done, they all moved over to the Petersen Ranch and started there after a burger and hotdog lunch.  Makenna and I left and went to clean up so we could head to town for her piano recital.

When she was done, we changed clothes again and joined the rest of the crew at the Petersen’s to finish up branding and have supper.  There were BBQ beef sandwiches {Thanks Dave and Jane!}, branding potatoes, calico baked beans, chips, take 5 bars, brownies, pumpkin bars, and all the water, pop, juice boxes and beer you could drink.  Everyone was tired and glad to have that job done for another year. Thanks for all the help and the good times!
