Yesterday was show day for cattle at the fair. Farmer had 4H calves when he was younger, but other than that, we didn't really know what to expect because this is our first year with a kiddo showing a "big steer".
I love seeing their little backsides with their numbers all pinned on. Somehow looks official and important to me.
Time with friends before going into the show ring. That's the thing I love the most about 4H so far. The friendships the girls (and Farmer and I!) are making along the way. Some old friends, some new!
Makenna showed her steer, Hoss in the Junior Division. She came away with a purple. He friend Jacey (to the right in the last picture) got the Grand Champion. We were all super happy! After the Junior Division, Makenna showed Hoss in the Bred and Fed category. Bred and Fed is where that calf was born and raised on your farm. She ended up with second purple in her class for that. Farmer was pretty happy that one of his "own" did so well in judging.
Marah is talking to the cattle judge. This is all for fun since she technically isn't old enough to show in a club yet. All these kiddos got a participation ribbon. Watch out for her next year!
This was a hi-light of the day when they announced who won rate of gain for the cattle. Ended up Makenna won Champion Beef Rate of Gain. Her steer gained just over 4.1 lbs/day. Perhaps this award should go to Papa for feeding him most mornings?!? At any rate, we're celebrating!
Hope you've all made it to your county fair, or have plans to go. It's a great experience for the kids and a fun way to see all they're accomplishing!
